Computational investigations on MPFI engine fueled blended ethanol, H2O based Micro-emulsions, and conventional gasoline

This research has been carried out on a multi-cylinder spark-ignition engine. The work is done computationally on one-dimensional simulation software AVL Boost and its performance, combustion, and emission characteristics were checked using various alternative fuels. The research completely defines the state of the art work on a conventional multi-cylinder spark-ignition engine. In this work, we used ethanol 85% blended with 15% gasoline as well as the same composition of ethanol but with the addition of 10% gasoline and 5%, H2O as an additive making it an emulsion fuel. We check for emission characteristics, combustion, and performance on a multi-cylinder spark-ignition engine. The blended fuels, 85% ethanol with 15% gasoline and H2O-based emulsion fuel showed much better performance and reduced emissions when compared with gasoline 100%. There was much reduction in NOx emissions using H2O-based emulsion fuel. Since the addition of H2O decreases the combustion temperature, which decreases the emissions. NOx emissions are reduced by lowering the temperature inside the combustion chamber. The combustion pressure also showed improvement-using H2O based emulsion fuel. Overall, adding ethanol 85% in 15% gasoline and H2O-based emulsion fuel showed promising results, particularly reduced emissions, and better combustion characteristics, which met the present emission standard.
