A RARE ETIOLOGY OF FEVER OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN:ULCERATIVE COLITIS

Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease is a very rare cause of fever of unknown origin (FUO). We present here a rare case of ulcerative colitis (UC) without diarrhea accompanied by the FUO. There were many ulcers covered with white exudate that was seen in the rectum to proximal part of the ascending colon. The pathological examination of colon biopsy material revealed UC. Medical therapy was started with mesalazine 2 g/day and prednisolone 40 mg/day. The body temperature of the patient decreased to normal levels after the second weeks of therapy. Our case was presented to emphasize that UC may be seen without classical symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain as a rare cause of FUO.
