Discrimination of quarry blasts and earthquakes in Trabzon and its vicinity
Abstract
In this study, seismic activity in Trabzon and its vicinity is investigated and natural and artificial seismic activities are discriminated. Total of 125 digital vertical velocity seismograms of 65 seismic events with Md;#8804;3.0 duration magnitude from earthquake catalog between 2006 to 2007 recorded by Trabzon (KTUT), Espiye (ESPY), Pazar (PZAR) broadband stations operated by Karadeniz Technical University were used in the study. The maximum S-wave and maximum P-wave amplitude ratio (S/P) of vertical velocity seismograms and power ratio (complexity, C) and spectral ratio (SR) were calculated. The earthquakes and the quarry blasts are discriminated by using the linear discriminant function on the graphics of S/P amp ratio to log S and C to Sr. At the end of this study 43 out of 65 events (66%) are determined as quarry blasts and 22 (34%) are as earthquakes.
