The article considers the motives of health / illness in the work of N. Karamzin in the light of artistic anthropology, epistemology and anthology of the writer; the typology of genetic sources of this motive and ways of its disclosing in Karamzin’s works are presented. On the example of the poems, the novel “Eugene and Julia”, “Letters of a Russian Traveler” conclusions are made about the specifics of the writer’s attitude to a disease as a manifestation of the unpredictability of life, impotence of a human in the fight against unknowable metaphysical laws of the universe and the need to accept them, which is interpreted in artistic thinking of Karamzin as a pledge of true mental health of a person. The conclusions are also made about the importance of health and disease motives (from regulatory traditionalist to the individual human creative concepts) in the literature abroad in 18-19th centuries.
