The need for the teacher's guidance activity is recognized as an essential requirement in all areas of the educational process and at all levels of education; In recent times, its significance and scope have increased as a result of the particularities and challenges of the contemporary world: the development of education, the search for answers to the so-called "school crisis" and the development of psychology and its application to educational field. The teacher is a professional counselor and performs this role as part of his professional role. The educational orientation today is conceived from a preventive approach, specifically in the universities it also has a professional approach, as a professional orientation. The present article, based on the experience of the authors as university professors in Ecuador and the bibliographical analysis, reflects on the challenges that this implies for the improvement of the teachers.
