Long Day’s Journey into Night, the famous Engen O’Neill’s has inspired this editorial focused on the long history of nature conservation in Romania, initiated by the late of XIX century thanks to a famous forester of that time. The main steps of legislating the nature conservation in the last century are briefly described in two paragraphs while the rest of the paper deals with the recent and awkward developments of the legal framework on Natura 2000 and protected areas. We also tried to explain why the central authorities have failed to communicate with the society in general and with local forest owns in particular, lacking a coherent approach of forest management plans, on the one hand, and the Natura 2000 management plans, on the other hand. We also highlight that too many ministers hamper the horizontal communication and coordination between different departments of the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forest and Waters.
