In thermoelectric materials, dislocations at grain boundaries can be used to scatter midfrequency phonons. Here, Chenet al. use vacancy engineering and thermal annealing to generate dislocations homogeneously within the crystalline grains and obtain good figures of merit for PbSe-based thermoelectrics.
