In 1987 and under the title In the country of last things, Auster publishes the chronicle of an imaginary, distopian city whose topography is built by the intensive literary use of an ontologically mimetical bond between word and world, by virtue of which a perfectly sinister correspondence is forged between the state of the language and that of the city itself.
