‘C90-167’: new sugarcane cultivar (Saccharum spp.) recommended for commercial exploitation
Abstract
At present, it is necessary to obtain new sugarcane cultivars with high sugar potential and adapted to several harvest cycles, so the present work aimed to show the agro-sugar characterization of the new cultivar ‘C90-167’, obtained and recommended by the Estación Territorial de Investigaciones de la Caña de Azúcar de Villa Clara, belonging to Instituto de Investigaciones de la Caña de Azúcar, for its commercial exploitation. This cultivar went through the selection scheme of the genetic improvement program of the breeding institution, from the initial stages of posture lots, clonal lots, and replicated experiments. The cultivar ‘C90-167’ stands out for its high agricultural yield and satisfactory sugar content in relation to the control cultivars ‘C86-12’ and ‘C1051-73’. It is necessary to emphasize, as an important attribute, the resistance presented in artificial foci of infection to the main pests and diseases of economic importance of the crop. It is recommended for planting in both long spring and cold cycles in carbonate-padded brown soils.
