This study focuses on possible impacts of urban renewal processes on Cemevies in case of İzmir metropolitan area by focusing on construction stories of cemevies. It claims neoliberal urbanism complicates the production of Cemevi and draws attention to differentiation between old and new urbanization processes in terms of production of Cemevi. Considering cemevies as new symbolic and representational places of publicity of Alevies, the study analysis their changing meaning and representational role in historical perspective as well. It emphasizes co-evolution of urbanization context and symbolic meaning of Cemevi in Turkey and indicates informal solidarity relations stemming from internal migration and rapid urbanization before 2000 facilitated construction of Cemevi by providing requested fiscal and social capital while the later one hampering it by defunctionalizing aforementioned capital. New developments such as increasing market pressure via materialization of urban space, determinative role of central government in urban renewal processes and policies conducted by central government for construction of conservative cities obstruct to build new cemevies.
