This article is devoted to the disclosing of the issue of the assessment of innovative potential of banks and one’s role in the maintaining competitive position of banks. For that purpose, has been employed matrix method of the zoning, proposed by consulting company McKinsey, and it allows to describe methodological basics of the estimation innovative potential of bank and its influence on bank’s competitiveness and soundness. Also, authors provided definition of innovative potential of the bank and disclosed hidden reserves and opportunities, which contain this criterion. Based on describing zones of competitiveness versus innovative potential of a bank it is considered methodological aspect of the forming bank’s development strategy, which is final goal of the analyzing interrelated influence of the innovative potential and competitive positioning of financial institution, which is a bank, on the market of banking services.
