The Effect of a Cognitive-Behavioral Counseling Program on Improving Self-Esteem and Reducing Psychological Stress among Syrian Refugee Children in Jordan
Abstract
This study seeks to reveal the effect of a cognitive-behavioral counseling program on improving self-esteem and reducing psychological stress among Syrian refugee children in Jordan. The study members were selected from Syrian female students in the age group (13-16) years. The sample consisted of thirty Syrian female students, who were randomly distributed into two groups, an experimental group and a control group. The researcher used psychological stress scales and self-esteem scales. The design and construction of the group counseling program was based on cognitive behavioral therapy. The results indicated that there were statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α ≥ 0.05), all of which came in favor of the experimental group, which indicates the effectiveness of the program in reducing psychological stress and improving self-esteem. The results also indicated that there were statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α ≥ 0.05) between the performance averages of the experimental and control groups on the tests of psychological stress and its dimensions, and self-esteem, all of which came in favor of the experimental group. The results also showed that there were statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α ≥ 0.05) between the mean scores of the experimental group members on the scales of psychological stress and self-esteem due to test (post-test and follow-up test) in favor of the follow-up test. This indicates the effectiveness of the program in reducing psychological stress and improving self-esteem. This improvement continued during the follow-up period. The study recommends developing more group counseling programs to address psychological, personal, social and behavioral issues in adolescents.
