This paper suggests to use an adaptive fuzzy logic PID controller (AFPID) for frequency regulation of an autonomous power system (APS) where the parameters of the AFPID are tuned by a modified moth flame optimization (mMFO) algorithm. The effectiveness of proposed mMFO technique is first equated with similar methods for benchmark test functions using statistical analysis. The effectiveness of mMFO based AFPID controller is then compared with that of an mMFO based classical PID controller as well as MFO, GWO, PSO and GSA based AFPID controller. The robustness of AFPID controller is furthermore investigated against variation of system parameters. Finally the suggested design approach is applied to a widely used two-area system and compared with some recent frequency control approaches.
