THE EURO-ATLANTIC OPPORTUNITY FOR ENSURING NATIONAL SECURITY

Abstract

Although it is a small state, the Republic of Moldova is a source of regional insecurity, instability and uncertainty, which, in the current geopolitical context, draws an increased attention of the West. In the context of the redefi nition of the regional geopolitical architecture in South-Eastern Europe, the Euro-Atlantic community countries perceive it as an element of a geostrategic game, a situation that has an imminent impact on the national security. Under these circumstances, the Republic of Moldova needs to capitalize its Euro-Atlantic opportunities to ensure the national security, depending on the geopolitical situation, the security environment in the South-Eastern Europe, and the national interest. The substantial role in strengthening the national security provided by the process of re-designing the regional geopolitical architecture will be played by the place the Republic of Moldova will be taking in the geostrategic arrangements of the European security system, which would ultimately contribute to the modifi cation of the status of the Republic of Moldova from a consumer to a provider of a regional security.
