The paper addresses the question of the relation between reasoning and argument that is raised by the absence of extensive references to reasoning in Plantin’s Dictionnaire de l’argumentation. This absence might seem surprising, given the apparent connection between the two, but it is argued that there is a reasonable explanation. Still, several connections worth noting are discussed: arguments justify and explain reasoning; there is reasoning within arguing; and the norms governing the two are similar.
