This article deals with phonetic variation and the teaching of French as a foreign language. By analyzing the forewords and the contents of three pronunciation textbooks, we hope to give a better understanding of the potential and of the limitations of an approach that aims to familiarize learners with phonetic (especially diatopic) variation and to replace, in the the learner’s mind, the idea of a homogeneous, uniform,’neutral’ target language by a dynamic conception of contemporary French.
