William Heinesen: from the book "Panorama with rainbow" (1972)
Abstract
This publication completes the series of the selected translations of the poetic works by the distinguished Danish-Faroese writer William Heinesen (1900–1991). It contains translations from his last book of poetry, "Panorama with Rainbow" (1972). The author himself interpreted this book as a kind of epilogue, though he has created other works after it: several collections of short stories and a novel. The universum of "Panoram with Rainbow“ is characterized by being very specified and cosmic at the same time. It contains philosophical poetry, references to significant persons in the Faroese culture, sketches from the author's journey the Soviet Union, satirical and lyrical poems about the modern culture and society. It has a number of features analogous to Heinesen's later prose works, not least mythologizing everyday routine and memories. He topic of memory can be interpreted widely, and the border between personal impressions and realities of the world culture is practically blurred. The formal aspect of the book is similar to Heinesen's previous book of poetry and the absolute majority of books in Danish and Faroese poetry of the 1970ies: all the poems, with very few exeptions, are written in free verse.
