Abstract
The tragic events of 11 September 2001 and thesubsequent US-led military action againstAfghanistan’s Taliban regime and al-Qa’ida thrustAfghanistan into the international spotlight andfinally placed it on the agenda of senior policy makersworldwide. What the media and policy makersdiscovered was a country ravaged by conflict andalready in the grip of one of the worst humanitariancrises in the world.
