A laboratory essay has been carried out, intending to study the pine bark performance as a substrate for seedlings, under a completely randomized experimental design with seven treatments and four replications, whose treatments were: pine bark (particles of 5, 7, 10, 12 e 24 mm), sphagnum moss, and ‘xaxim’ (fern stem). The plant toxicity has been evaluated using the seed germination of lettuce, cucumber, tomato and radish, in a substrate moistened with the solutions leached from the substrates studied. The chemical analysis and the water retention ability have also been done. There were no differences on the germination of anyone of the seeds used, showing the absence of adverse effects on the seed germinated in the leached solutions. The pine bark showed a better chemical balance, in relation to sphagnum moss and ‘xaxim’, but its water retention and substrate moisture degree have been lower than in sphagnum moss and xaxim. The pine bark water retention has been inversely proportional to its diameter of particles. By its physical and biological characteristics, the pine bark is an alternative stuff feasible to be used as a substrate, alone or combined.
