Mathematics education and its changes

The article contains a brief survey of the history of mathematics education asa science abroad and points out how it has influenced the Czech mathematics educationresearch. An emphasis is placed on research carried out within a PhD study at theFaculty of Education, Charles University in Prague. On the example of a concretePhD Board some prerequisites of a successful existence of mathematics education as anindependent discipline are summarised: active researchers in mathematics education,integration into the trends of foreign research, rigorous usage of existing researchresults, contact with boarder fields (mainly mathematics, pedagogy, psychology) andpractice (teachers), creating a scientific community.
