Over- and Under-tourism as Interconnected Phenomena of the Modern Globalizing World

Today, international tourism, under the influence of globalization, demonstrates dynamic pace of development and is becoming one of the most significant factors in the advancement of countries. The ability to travel is one of the features of modern society. Thus, tourism becomes part of people’s lives, thereby forming many socio-economic, environmental, cultural and other problems. Therefore, issues related to over-saturation of destinations and lack of tourists in less popular places are of high relevance and require studying and solving. The subject of this article is the coexistence of over-tourism and under-tourism in the world and, in particular, in Ukraine. The aim of the study is to consider the trends in the development of over-tourism and under-tourism in the world and to determine the ways of their development. Tasks: covering the main problems (over-saturation of destinations) and prospects (attracting tourists to less popular holiday destinations) of the development of modern tourist trends; formulating a strategy for using international experience to promote trips to places that are an alternative to well-known tourist destinations. The article uses analytical, comparative and other research methods. Results of the study: the main trends in the development of the phenomena of over-saturation of destinations and under-tourism in the world and, in particular, in Ukraine, their impact on the national economy and ways to attract more tourists to our country are identified. Conclusion: due to the study of the experience of various countries of the world, the directions that can be used to solve the problems of over-tourism and the spread of under-tourism as its alternative are outlined.
