Microarchitectonics of the corpus callosum of mature people.
Abstract
Background. The structural principle of the corpus callosum organization at the microscopic level remains unsolved. Objective. The purpose of this study is to consider the principle of the corpus callosum organization at the microscopic level. Methods. Excised flat plates (2 mm thick) made from pre-fixed whole mounts of the corpus callosum of 5 men and 5 women aged from 36 to 60 years were used in the study. These plates were divided into two groups. One of the groups was subjected to the impregnation in 1% osmium tetroxide solution, and then these plates were plastinated in the epoxy resin. After complete polymerization the resulting blocks were used to make serial semithin sections. To stain these sections 1% solution of methylene blue on 1% borax solution was used and the latter mixed with the basic fuchsin and Azur-1. Results. The study of these serial sections in a sequential order made it possible to determine the nature of the configuration change of corpus callosum tissue microscopic structures in the depth of the three-dimensional extension and determine the spatial interrelation between them. Conclusion. The entire transportation system of corpus callosum, carrying out the processes of liquid microcirculation with nutrients dissolved, is entirely focused on providing functional and structural permanence of the myelin sheaths of nerve fibers only. Actually, this statement may be true (in case of further studies) in relation to all the white matter of the brain, as it appears that the concept of the blood-brain barrier, serving as selective mediation of metabolism between blood and the bodies of nerve cells in the gray matter cannot be applied here.
