Simp czy sigma? Wizerunek Stanisława Wokulskiego w memach

Abstract

This article discusses the image of Stanisław Wokulski presented in selected memes and determines its connections with the present-day cultural imaginary regarding Bolesław Prus’s novel Lalka [The Doll]. The paper indicates that internet users usually refer two contemporary categories to describe certain episodes from the character’s life and the attitudes he displays: the simp and the sigma. These terms do not belong to scientific discourse, but correspond to it in a humorous parallel. The article notes the connection between the traits associated with manhood in the Romantic and positivist periods and those of the 21st century. The topicality of the issue of Prus’s Lalka in relation to certain social phenomena in recent years was also pointed out.
