In this paper I present an approach to the use of software for the analysis of music and the way it articulates itself within a research plan. Taking as an example the use of the software Sonic Visualiser in the analysis of rhythmic and metric variations, and the description of vocality in amateur performers from Estancia La Candelaria (Córdoba, Argentina), I argue that computer-assisted music analysis (i) is not an end but a tool in the context of a broader research plan; (ii) offers alternatives that are absent in traditional analysis; (iii) speeds up the study of data; (iv) addresses questions about the cognitive processes of interpretation and perception; (v) provides innovative resources for the description and presentation of analysis. This paper aims to fill a void regarding this subject in Latin America.
