This article examines critically Hartmut Esser's multilevel explanatory model. After presenting the main characteristics of his theory [1. Logic of the situation, 2. Logic of the action and 3. Logic of the aggregation and the transformation], it is discussed the attempt of Esser in integrating the theory of the social action and the theory of the social practice in a unique model denominated Frame Selektion, as well its use of elements of systems theory. Despite the problems and limitations of Esser's theory, it is argued that the "macro-micro-macro" model represents an important meta-theoretical platform for the comparative analysis of sociological paradigms.
