This essay discusses the interrelationship of intentionality, invention and reduction to the absurd in Edmundo O'Gorman's La invención de América. The question of the reduction to the absurd has a long history that goes from Parmenides to Marx. O'Gorman's reduction to the absurd, like Marx’s, speaks of fetishism. In principle, O'Gorman argues, one may not speak of material objects with intentionality. This essay suggests a strategy to consider the intentionality of American things.
