How important was Latin America to the First World War?

Abstract

Este artículo examina el impacto de Latinoamérica en la Primera Guerra Mundial, cubriendo la laguna existente entre las historias de Latinoamérica que se centran en cómo la Gran Guerra afectó a cada república y las historias de la Primera Guerra Mundial que ignoran por completo a Latinoamérica. El presente estudio expone la forma en que se libró la guerra en Latinoamérica, examina cómo la diplomacia y las decisiones de los dirigentes de la región afectaron la situación de cada una de las partes beligerantes y juzga las repercusiones del conflicto en América Latina en cuanto a los resultados de la Guerra Mundial en conjunto. Abstract This article examines the impact of Latin America on the First World War, fitting into the gap between the existing histories of Latin America that focus on how the Great War impacted each republic and the histories of the First World War that completely ignore Latin America. This study exposes ways that the war was fought in Latin America, considers how the diplomacy and decisions of the region’s leaders affected the situation of each belligerent side, and judges the impact of the conflict in Latin America on the outcome of the overall World War.
