The author seeks to clarify the current meaning of euthanasia, distinguishing it from procedures that are acceptable from a clinical, ethical and legal standpoint. He then presents briefly the main arguments used in the reflection and debate of this theme. The main arguments in favor of euthanasia and/or assisted suicide are the relief of pain and suffering, considered unbearable by the patient, and respect for his personal autonomy. The main arguments against are the inviolability of human life and the risk of misuses and abuses. He concludes that the arguments in favor of euthanasia and/or assisted suicide are insufficient and unsatisfactory to justify its legalization.
