Cytodiagnosis of medullary carcinoma thyroid- role of FNAC and serum calcitonin- A case report
Abstract
Medullary carcinoma of thyroid (MCT) is a rare neuro-endocrine thyroid malignancy, which is associated with specific supportive diagnostic markers. Despite this, its cytological diagnosis is often difficult. We report here a case of MCT in a 57 year old female presented as tinnitus. The diagnosis was established on ultrasound guided FNAC (fine-needle aspiration cytology) and high serum calcitonin and confirmed by histopathology & immuno-histochemistry.This case is reported to highlight the presentation of this rare thyroid tumor and to emphasize the need for meticulous clinical examination and high index of suspicion to diagnose it and to rule out underlying multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) association.
