The dispersed city: recent changes in the residential spaces of the Community of Madrid

Recent change in metropolitan areas affects particularly the spatial structures of the peripheries. The traditional compact city is changing to increasingly discontinuous, dispersed and fragmented metropolitan spaces. Metropolitan processes of dispersion of population are creating new low density residential spaces. This paper analysis the characteristics of the new residential spaces in the suburbs of Madrid, taking into account the growth in the number of houses, the residential building types and the densities in the residential spaces.
