It is a general assumption that in Italian the use of punctuation allows for greater freedom than in German. The purpose of our contribution is to demonstrate that the differences between the two languages are not so much dependent on freedom as on a difference in the principles of the use of punctuation: the use is informative and textual in Italian, strictly syntactic in German. This is a profound difference, which the recent reforms in German punctuation have only affected in part.
