Prophylactic measures against African swine fever at Kounden. Cameroon. Since the 1982 outbreak of African Swine Fever in Cameroon, the majority of intensive pig production units in the country have been affected. Free ranging traditionally kept pigs of the local breed, seem more resistant to the disease, and are suspected to form a reservoir from where new outbreaks can start, thus endangering the intensive units. Nevertheless, as has been proved in other countries as well, intensive pig production is still possible, provided the application of strict prophylactic hygienic measures. A description is given of the situation at Kounden Livestock Station, where strict isolation measures seem to have been successfull in preventing the disease from entering. Applied measures where : closed unit, with artificial insemination as a means of diversification of blood, all animals kept in confinement, whole mash ration locally made, no swill or offal fed. disinfection of vehicles, pig-proof fencing, no visitors allowed, working-clothes, proper disposal of mortalities after post mortem examination.
