NASOLACRIMAL DUCT OBSTRUCTION DIAGOSTIC

Abstract

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) is by far the most common cause of abnormal lacrimal secretions and periocular epiphora in infants, newborn and young children. Diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of tears and periocular secretions. Approximately 80% of newborns, infants and children with these symptoms are diagnosed by a family doctor, pediatrician or ophthalmologist with bacterial conjunctivitis, leading to incorrect treatment that delays healing. Within the Ophthalmology Compartment of SCJU Arad we diagnosed NLDO by specific methods in 187 patients from 266 cases with epiphora, of which 209 were previously labeled as having an infectious conjuctivitis, thus influencing the treatment of the disease.
