This paper presents a linguistic analysis of unpublished folk poetry. The study deals with a collection of quatrains as recited by the military draftees from the Spanish village of San Cebrian de Campos (Palencia). The study shows that in the corpus of language analysed there is no clear division between the spoken and written language. As Koch and Oesterreicher (1990) observe, these two forms of expression are often closely related. They speak of the transition (continuum) of the conception between spoken (immediacy) and written (distance) language. The continuum between these two poles becomes clearly evident in the corpus of language analysed in this study. After an analysis of the phonological and morphosyntactic phenomena in the verses of the Quintos, we notice how closely communicative immediacy is linked to distance.
