Recevoir et traduire Proust en espagnol et en portugais : un voyage euro-américain (1920-1960)

Abstract

By December 1919, Proust's name was circulating all over the world, thanks to the Goncourt prize won by the author for À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs: it was in Spain that he was partially translated for the first time. In this respect, it is interesting that the author's importers in Spain and Argentina are partly the same. In Brazil, the first article devoted specifically to the author of La Recherche, in 1923, was based on a review published a few weeks earlier in the Madrid press. Similarly, the complete Latin American translations of Proust precede the Portuguese translations. It seems clear, then, that Proust's distribution in Spanish and Portuguese involved a high degree of circulation between Latin Europe and Latin America, with the latter making use of intermediaries and regional particularities.
