Experiences with physical activity among women with eating disorders. An interview study

Purpose: This study explores experiences with the phenomenon of physical activity among women with eating disorders (ED), in which physical activity is considered a symptom of the disorder. The purpose of the study is to contribute to increased insight and understanding about the phenomenon of physical activity among women with ED. Increased insight and understanding might contribute to the development of better treatment. Method: Data collection was carried out by semi-structured individual interviews with six women. Transcripts were analyzed using systematic text condensation. Findings: The participants describe positive and negative experiences with physical activity. The findings emphasize how physical activity helps regulate physical and emotional discomfort, and illustrates the connection between physical activity, identity, and belonging. Conclusion: This study provides increased insight in how women with eating disorders experience physical activity. In order to understand the participants' conflicting experiences, a holistic perspective on illness and health is needed.
