Categorization of tissue repair materials by in vivo outcomes and clinical application of biologic ECM materials in soft tissue reconstruction in GI surgery
Abstract
[Abstract] Surgeons usually need to make clinical decision on tissue repair during clinical practice. Tissue repair materials has been an essential part of tissue repair scheme in today’s clinical management. However, although facing so many choices of tissue repair products, surgeons may feel confusing in variable frameworks for categorization of tissue repair materials as well. The authors believe a categorization framework based on the in vivo outcomes of tissue repair materials brings more value to clinical decision making, because the in vivo outcomes is directly related to the long-term treatment outcome after material implantation. Thus, the authors proposed a categorization framework of tissue repair materials, based on the different in vivo outcomes of each category of materials, and summarized different tissue repair mechanisms of each type of tissue repair materials. The authors further discussed more details as to the ECM-based Biologic materials, in terms of its mechanism of tissue regeneration, its outcomes in multiple types of tissue regeneration. The authors extended the discussion on the clinical application of ECM technology in GI Surgery, as well as general principles of best practice for ECM-based Biologic materials.
