With this trial we examine student self-assessment with rubrics as a means to improve primary school students’ performance. The research sample was 70 fifth and sixth grade students, 39 of whom were in the experimental groups and 31 in the control groups. The students of the experimental groups applied self-assessment with rubrics for a period of two and a half months in Language, History and Writing subjects. All students were assessed with a knowledge test before and after the intervention to compare their scores. The results showed that students’ self- assessment has a positive effect on students’ school performance, especially in Writing. This study emphasizes the importance of ongoing research in this area as well as the need for teacher training.
