The Adsorption of Organic Halides on Silver-Impregnated Silica Gels
Abstract
The adsorption characteristics of methyl and n -propyl iodides, methyl and n -propyl chlorides and chlorobenzene on pure and silver-impregnated silica gels have been studied in order to clarify the mechanism of adsorption of these compounds and to characterize the state of silver on the silica surface under various pretreatment conditions. At least three adsorption sites are found on the surface of impregnated silica, such as free OH groups, silver ions for which protons of free OH groups are ion-exchanged and small clusters and/or colloidal particles of silver which have been reduced from ions. Some adsorption mechanisms of methyl iodide on these sites are suggested.
