Linguistic Peculiarities and Basic Functions of Codenames of French Military Operations

Abstract

The codename of military operation is a specific linguistic sign resulting from the «artificial nomination». It permits to achieve some pragmatic and communicative purposes. The present case-study explores the formation and basic functions of the nicknames of French military operations. The analysis allows considering the military naming as a phenomenon which belongs not only to the professional, but also to the cultural dimension and depends from a specific geopolitical and military context.
