FROM "TALKING ARCHITECTURE" TO MONUMENTAL PROPAGANDA: SYMBOLIC STRATA OF ST. PETERSBURG AND BUDAPEST, LATE 19TH - MID 20TH CENTURY
Abstract
On the example of Budapest and St. Petersburg in the late XIX - XX centuries. the role of "speaking" architecture in the formation of the national spirit is considered. The heroic architectural landscape of St. Petersburg, imbued with a warlike spirit, is opposed to the bourgeois Budapest, whose “talking architecture” is overflowing with symbols of abundance and fertility. The prerequisites that influenced the development of the Magyar revival are revealed: Catholic baroque, reformist architecture, Masonic tradition, folklore motifs.
