The impact of gunshot injuries on the shoulder and proximity to the carotid artery
Abstract
Background: Gunshot and shrapnel injuries present significant challenges in trauma medicine, with a notable increase in their incidence over recent years. Advances in military technology and increased firearm accessibility have escalated the prevalence of such injuries, contributing to both interpersonal and economic impacts on communities. This underscores the importance of addressing gunshot injuries within the context of urban medicine, as well as considering revisions to regulatory guidelines.Case Presentation: This report describes the treatment complexities of a patient with gunshot wounds impacting critical structures, specifically the brachial plexus and carotid artery. Managing such injuries required a coordinated approach involving multiple specialties and timely surgical intervention to ensure optimal patient outcomes.Discussion: This case highlights the challenges of managing severe gunshot injuries, emphasizing the need for multi-disciplinary care and prompt intervention. Gunshot wounds pose significant public health issues, stressing the importance of preventive strategies and stronger trauma response systems. Ongoing research, improved trauma education, and coordinated care practices are crucial to enhancing trauma management and patient outcomes.
