Mallet hallux injury with extensor tendon rupture and avulsion fracture

Abstract

Mallet hallux injury typically occurs due to trauma from forced hyperflexion. The injury is commonly an avulsion fracture of the extensor hallucis longus tendon at the distal end of the great toe, but the extensor tendon can also rupture around its insertion into the first distal phalanx. It is rare for both types of injury to occur simultaneously. A mallet toe occurring in the hallux is rarely reported, and there is no established standard treatment method. Here, we present our therapeutic strategy for a case of traumatic avulsion fracture and tendon rupture of the distal phalanx of the hallux.
