This article presents the results of bacteriological monitoring of 563 children from Zaporizhzhya and Zaporizhzhya region suffering from acute respiratory infections (ARI). 15.3 % cases ARI was caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae pathogen. The analysis of antibiograms showed the maximal antibiotic susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae to the third-generation cephalosporins, vancomycin and ciprofloxacin. A high antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae was observed to clindamycin (50.0 %) and penicillin (96.8 %). The rationale cefpodoxim proxetil use for starting antibacterial therapy of ARI in children was based upon the results.
