This text presents and discusses the emergence of the extension program entitled: Translators and interpreters of sign languages in the legal sphere (known as TILSJUR). When considering the principle of inseparability between teaching, research and extension, three axes make up this extension program, namely: (i) translation-interpretation of sign languages in the legal sphere; (ii) discussions on the terminology of legal glossaries in the Portuguese-Brazilian Sign Language pair; and (iii) demands and challenges of the deaf community in the access to legal contexts. Through a qualitative approach, based on the action research, the main results of the extension actions carried out by the Program are discussed in this text. One of the main results was the approximation between Brazilian Sign Language (known as Libras) and the Judiciary, through the translation of the Booklet: Violência Doméstica: Perguntas e Respostas em Libras (Domestic Violence: Questions and Answers in Libras) in a partnership that involved the TILSJUR Extension Program, the Federal University of Santa Catarina and the Court of Justice of Santa Catarina.
