The aim of this study was to investigate psychologists’ training and professional practice at the public healthnetwork in the country side of RS. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five professionals and contentanalyzed. Results showed that the professional training did not properly prepare the psychologists interviewed tothe work at the public health network, since the main focus of training was the clinical model centered at theindividual level. Although participants were critical about the traditional psychological practices model, they did notlook for additional training with a different approach to mental health care. Based on this results, the authors claimfor an urgent and critical evaluation of psychological education, arguing in favor of a better integration of academy, health services and the population. On academic grounds, it is necessary to create learning methodologies thatpromote students’ participation as well the development of critical and reflexive skills that allows a revision ofhealth care models historically employed in psychological interventions. On the other hand, it is important that theprofessionals think of themselves not just as practitioners, but as reflexive agents that produce new knowledge thatcan be used in academy.
