Natural science can both have a profound influence on and be itself influenced by other aspects of culture, even those which at first seem far removed from the laboratory. The present essay discusses the way in which modern theoretical physics may be treated from precisely such a cultural perspective. At its centre stands Albert Einstein and his theories of relativity and how they were presented to the Swedish public, primarily in the daily press, at the beginning of the 1920s.
