Abstract

The volume edited by the anthropologist Corinne Fortier presents a variegated picture of the complexity of contemporary legal and social practices linked to the issues of trans and intersexual orientations. Contemporary law in the field of gender has clearly evolved in the last years, although along different models according to the countries. One original feature of the volume is the integration, into a unique perspective, of bodily transformations performed in a trans or intersexual context and bodily transformations such as mastectomies performed in cases of breast cancers and such as the use of medical devices for correcting a handicap (i.e. cochlear implantation for the deaf people). The volume thus deals with the general issue of a legal and social acknowledgement of the right to distinct bodily identities, or identities rooted in their bodies, (in individuals and associations as well) when they diverge from the current medical and social standards.
