The circulation of liberal ideas in the periphery of nation: press, libertyand citizenship in the Province of Goiás
Abstract
This article analyzes the circulation of liberal ideas in peripheral province of Goiás in beginning of Regencial period, in order of to discuss how the Brazilian national consciousness was being built through the press in nineteenth-century Brazil . The first goiano newspaper A Matutina Meiapontense,by publishing letters of readers from different locations, enabled us to see how the modern idea of nation was appropriated and widespread by the literate elite of the province after the abdication of D. Pedro I.
