Besides making an historical description the level of interest of the Chilean society, regarding the national defense between 1910 and 1960, This essay, analyses the political and the military factors that influenced the range of the development of this state’s function, emphasizing the conceptual vacuums and the effects the crisis and institutional instability environments had over the formal structure of the defense during most of the time observed by this study. This, along with an absence of a political-military relationship in accordance with the intent of have a national defense that would reflect the experience of the country in the field of force employment, obtained during the XIX century or those coming from wars in the following century. At the end, all of that, hindered to consolidate the disposition needed by the external security of the country. Therefore, until 1960, processes were not defined, neither the structures and the actors of the system, that would allow the global conduct of the defense facing potential external threats to national security.
